How Can a Handmade Rug Impact Interior Design?

When people think of interior design they usually start thinking about the walls and what color it should be painted. Then they move on to the furniture and decide which pieces would accentuate the room best. Very often people don’t take into consideration the role of the floors and the carpets. They are also part of the décor and play integral parts in creating the best look for the home. Whilst it is difficult to redo the floors when you are renovating, it is fairly easy to make use of carpets. Here are a few ways in which interior design and rugs play significant roles in decorating a room.

Visual pathways

Think of your hallway at home. Is it a very exciting look? Probably not. Most hallways look dead and empty because it is not really a room. This is the mistake a lot of people make. They make possible the transition from one room to the next and its décor must flow with the rest of the house. Carpets are a great way to help with the ambience in a hallway. Choose the right carpet in order to attract attention to the hallway as well as its surrounding rooms.

Create areas in open plan spaces

Many modern developments are now being built with open plan kitchens, dining rooms, and living rooms. Whilst this is a trend that many young homeowners are chasing, it does become difficult to create separate styles for each part of the room. A carpet is a great way to create an enclosed area where you can let one style become dominant. Anchor your furniture by placing it on the carpet so that it does not get lost in the vast open room.

Lighten up dark spaces

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about a dark space in your house where very little natural light comes in. A lighter carpet will, of course, break a bit of the dark and brighten it up. It prevents the shadows that are being formed from creating a flat and boring look. It also helps to lift the darker design scheme.

There is a significant connection between rugs and interior design; one can absolutely not function properly without the other.

Rug Options That Dramatically Impact Interior Design?

Many homeowners often feel like they need a change from their day-to-day routine and then they decide to redecorate their house. This often costs a lot of money especially if you enlist the skills of an interior designer. Luckily you don’t have to spend a small fortune to give your house a facelift. You can simply replace your carpets. There are many carpets that are perfect for interior design; all you have to do is find the carpet that is perfect for you.

Here are a few ideas that you can use to transform your home:

Shaggy shag

The majority of people tend to stay away from shaggy carpets because they are difficult to clean if you have pets, but nothing can beat its luxurious feel. It is very 70s but retro is making a comeback so you might as well invest in it. Pair a shaggy carpet like this with leather sofas and chairs and a small cocktail coffee table and you will have a brand new living room before you know it at minimal cost.

Patterns on patterns

We have been told our entirely life that we cannot match one type of pattern with another. We’re here to tell you that you don’t need to follow the rules. Interior designers have noted that geometric patterns pair wonderfully with rich Persian carpets. It is especially colors like grey and black that complement the red and black patterns in a carpet very well. Add to this a mustard yellow couch and you have a look that is out of this universe.

Go contrast yourself!

One element that many people brush off is how contrasts in textures pair well with each other. Interior designers often add a hard element to a soft carpet so that the stark differences are highlighted and accentuated. If you have furniture with steel legs or a steel table then a soft Persian rug would definitely complement the style. You can keep the furniture on the neutral color spectrum but add one or two bold chairs to the room to bring some life into the environment.

How Does An Area Rug Impact Home Design?

If you have a room in your house that seriously lacks excitement then the solution is simple: add a rug to it. A rug is an affordable way to brighten up any room and apart from weekly vacuuming it requires very little maintenance. Rugs are incredibly versatile in the sense that you can do a lot with them in one specific room. It can anchor a room, define it, add warmth, or help accentuate a room’s décor. It all depends on the purpose of the rug.

Here are a few ideas that you can use in order to create the perfect home design with your rugs:

Define areas

Rugs are a great way to separate areas, especially in studio apartments where everything is open plan. Add one to the foyer, the kitchen, the living room and the dining room and hey presto!

Create variety

You can add two different rugs in one room or area in order to create some variety. Just be careful that you don’t add two rugs of the same shape or color – it could split the room in two.

Create hegemony

If you decide to use more than one rug, you want it to look unified and create an overall hegemonic look. Make sure that the rugs complement each other and try not to use too many layers. This could result in an eyesore and make the room look tacky and unpleasant.

Control the volume

Make sure that your rug does not disturb the rest of the décor in your room. If you have bold wallpaper, you cannot throw a bold rug in the same room. Rather opt for a neutral rug so that it shows off different contrasts. Play around with the volume. Only you can decide how much you want to turn it up or down.

Use it as wall decoration

A rug can easily be hung on a wall in order to create a focal point especially if the wall is painted a neutral color.  It can have a huge impact if you choose a bold color instead of a monotonous or generic standard color. This is where Persian carpets come into play. There are worth a lot more than standard carpets and they will definitely be a feast for the eyes in any room.

Area rug room design does not have to be tricky at all. You just need to keep your eye open for specific patterns and trends and grab them when the time is right.

The Importance of Rugs and Interior Design:

Have you ever walked into a room and noticed that it is lacking something? Perhaps the entire feel of the room is just completely off and a certain element is missing.

It could be that the room needs a rug.

Any expert will tell you the importance of the right type of rug in a room and that the wrong one could be disastrous for any type of environment. Rugs have many different important characteristics that help light up a room in terms of interior design.

Here are some of the basic impacts of rugs as a decorative piece:

Rugs have the ability to complement a room and give it a smoother, unified look. Fine rugs can add softer tones to a room and help particular colors stand out without overruling other aspects of the design. Bolder colors can add character to a very dark and drab room that does not get enough natural light. It doesn’t matter whether it is an office space, a bedroom, or a dining room, the right color carpet can be life changing and when you see the difference you are going to kick yourself for not acting sooner.

If everything in your house was one color, what would it look like? Pretty boring and with absolutely no depth. This applies to texture as well. Having only one type of texture in your house can become extremely monotonous. The right texture rug will definitely add improvement to your living areas. Try and find the right balance of texture and weight when you buy a rug.  A rug that is too bulky or threadbare is going to show flaws in your design.

People fall in love with homes because of the way they feel and a rug can help to create the perfect atmosphere in your home. A fine rug can create a very tranquil atmosphere whilst chunky carpets can lend a sense of comfort and warmth. It’s all about the purpose and role you want it to play in your home.

The importance of carpets and interior design can absolutely not be overestimated. Both go hand in hand to create a fantastic look and feeling to any home.

How Interior Designers Utilize Area Rugs:

Browse through fifty years of Architectural Digest, and you will find that Oriental rugs are featured in at least one home in every issue. In fact, Oriental rugs have been prized in Western interiors since the 16th century. Why? Because they make rooms look wonderful, and they do it instantly, without any trouble at all. Besides that, they’re practical. They’re easy to care for and they last for decades.

Designing with Oriental rugs is surprisingly easy. Essentially it’s a matter of trying rugs at home until you find one that looks great. One needn’t be an expert to judge what looks good, and, in fact, the most important thing is to find a rug or carpet that you really love.

If you’d still like professional help with your interior, Rug Resources can recommend a professional interior designer in your area. Phone us for a referral at 949-673-1693.

If possible, start with the Oriental carpet.

1. If possible, start with the Oriental rug.

A hundred and fifty years ago, Edger Allen Poe wrote that “the soul of the apartment is the carpet.” He meant that the carpet is the foundation of the décor, and all else flows from it. The moment you choose carpets for a room, you establish how the room will be laid out—into one large space, for instance, or, using several smaller rugs, into discrete areas such as the space before the fireplace or the area behind the sofa. Secondly, when you choose the rug or rugs for a room, you establish the colors that will look good in it. It is far easier to buy furniture and fabric to complement the carpet than the other way around.

2. Using this website is a good way to get started.

On it you can easily familiarize yourself with the styles of Oriental rugs that are available, their cost and so forth. You will be able to search by many parameters simultaneously. For instance, you may want to do a search for new rugs between 9 and 10 ft wide by 12 to 13 ft long, with natural dyes, formal designs and blue fields. Or nearly anything else.

To see everything in stock, visit the store in Corona Del Mar. Eventually you will want to try rugs at home on an approval basis. Rug dealers expect it.

3. Determine the right size of the carpet you will need for the room.

Usually there is no harm in having the front legs of a chair or sofa on the rug and the back legs off.

You most likely will want to allow for a border of hardwood floor or of carpeting (or marble or whatever your floor is made of) to show on all sides of the carpet. So, for instance, if the space in which you would like a rug is 12 feet by 16 feet, you might select a carpet that is 9 by 12 feet, thus allowing for one and a half or two feet of border all the way around the carpet—with less space around a smaller rug.

In any case, don’t be too rigid about the size you require. Many people make the process of finding a rug almost impossible by hitting on an exact size and insisting on it. If you can, come up with a range of sizes that are possible. You will vastly increase the number of rugs from which to choose. Consider, for instance, that ordinarily there is no harm in having the front legs of a chair on a carpet and the rear legs off. Being flexible about size may mean the difference between winding up with a carpet that “works,” and one that you really love.

Usually there is no harm in having the front legs of a chair or sofa on the rug and the back legs off.

The Traditional Oriental rug sizes are:

  • 3.5 ft x 5 ft
  • 4 ft x 6 ft
  • 5 ft x 7 or 8 ft
  • 6 ft x 9 ft
  • 8 ft x 10 ft
  • 9 ft x 12 ft
  • 10 ft x 14 ft
  • 12 ft x 15 ft
  • 12 ft x 18 ft

At Rug Resources you will find a good selection of all sizes.

4. People buy Oriental rugs on the basis of color, and rightly so.

Having the right colors in a room is absolutely critical. But who is to say which are the right colors? Well, you are. On the basis of our experience, do-it-yourself designers are remarkably sophisticated in choosing colors. In any case, you will have the opportunity to take rugs home on an approval basis, making the whole process of choosing colors a lot less abstract If possible, when you visit a showroom, bring swatches of fabric from upholstery or drapes. Not only will that help you, but it will help your salesman know what to show you.

Keep this in mind: Dark colors in a carpet bring the ceiling down. Light colors make the ceiling seem higher.

5. Design

There are thousands of Oriental rug designs, but basically they fall into the following groups, each of which will influence the design of your interior.

  1. Designs with straight lines and geometric figures. These designs suggest country origins and may even have a kind of Navajo rug feeling. Designs like this are useful informal interiors such as a south-west look, for instance, or an arts-and-crafts look.
  2. Designs with curvilinear lines. These are associated with carpets of a city manufacture and are useful in more formal settings such as a European-inspired interior.
  3. Contemporary designs. These may run from abstract to single-color rugs, but one thing they have in common is that they often are appropriate in modern and contemporary interiors.

Beyond these broad categories, you will find designs that are based on medallions, others that are all-over, a few that are pictorial, some that are directional, and others that are organized into panels. Each has a different effect in a room. For instance, a rug with a central medallion usually is placed so that the medallion falls in the middle of something, so to speak—under a chandelier, for instance, or in the middle of an area or room or under the middle of a table.

The medallion in this carpet provides a focal point in the room.

Another distinction you may make is between small-scale and large-scale designs. It may be said that small scale designs call attention to the furniture on them, while carpets with large-scale, dramatic designs call more attention to themselves and become an important focal point in the interior.

In the end, though, in this matter of carpet design you may wish to be guided simply by what you like. Many people, for instance, prefer rugs with central medallions. If it so happens that the medallion doesn’t line up with some other interior feature, it is no great tragedy. The most important thing about interior design, in our opinion, is to love the final outcome and to be delighted by the objects with which you have surrounded yourself.

Using the browse rugs feature of this web site, you may search for carpets using the following criteria (among many others): Modern, Persian, Afghan, Antique, Traditional, Transitional, and Kilim.

The Top Ways to Design Around an Ugly Carpet or Rug:

No carpet or rug is not always better than an unappealing carpet or rug which is probably why you have a rug in your house that you can’t stand. Many people might tell you that the solution is simple: throw it out and buy a new one, but you might not be in the right financial place to afford a new carpet. You might not even have time to do proper carpet shopping. Fear not! Here are a few ways in which you can design the room around a less than attractive carpet.

Cover it up

There might be a horrible stain looking at you with its stained eyes and you just can’t seem to get it out. Until you find a permanent solution, just cover it up. You can put a table’s leg on top of it or you can move the leg of your sofa so that it subtly hides the carpet. A great way to do this is to rotate the carpet until it is in a better position to be covered up by another piece of furniture. No one will even notice what you did and you have peace of mind.

Change the color of your walls

If you have a carpet that covers your entire floor, it might be difficult and expensive to remove. That does not mean that you have to enjoy it until the day you move out. Carpets are all about color and which shades work for you. You will find that if you change the color of your walls, the carpet won’t look so terrible after all. In fact, you might just come to like it. You can consider brightening your walls to give the carpet and the room some fresh light.

Use an accent wall

Accent walls are great in any home, but for homes with carpeted flooring it can be amazing. If you find that your carpets are a bit boring or bland, you can simply change one of your walls into an accent wall. If you paint it a bold color or decorate it with a bright pattern, your room will change right in front of your eyes. And the best part? No one will even notice the carpet because they will be too engrossed by you cool new accent wall.

Don’t worry about your carpet woes! Simply use these few tricks to overcome them.
